Caro’s KitchenAid

Caro came to us with an idea. She had a big birthday coming up and knew exactly what she wanted – a cherry red KitchenAid. We were very happy to help create a special patchwork for Caro to send out to her friends in time for her celebrations.

We’ll let Caro tell you about her patchwork in her own lovely words.

I’ve always been a fan of baking good, honest, homely bakes.  Some have even suggested I apply to compete on Great British Bake Off but frankly I like baking to be relaxing, not stressful, otherwise it ceases to be an enjoyable hobby!  And I’m not sure I could compete with a cake in a shape of a peacock!

So as my 50th birthday loomed I wondered what I might like, and nothing little came to mind (I have expensive taste!). A few friends proudly display their KitchenAids in their kitchens and I must confess to harbouring a bit of jealousy, and then the idea dawned on me to have a Patchwork for my 50th. Perfect. My friends know my love of baking so were really generous and glad to contribute to something which they know will be used and the results shared.

I purchased this thing of beauty a few weeks before my party but was disciplined enough to walk past it on a daily basis in its box and gaze longingly, deciding not to use it until after the celebrations. I even baked this chocolate and raspberry cake for a friend with my little hand beater, marvelling at my self control not to reach for my new toy!

When I did use it for the first time I decided to return to ‘O’ level cookery lessons and start with a lemon meringue pie and a bakewell tart.  These were hilarious disasters, not because of the KitchenAid, but because I had also a new oven installed and wasn’t quite accustomed to it!

The KitchenAid doesn’t only look iconic in the kitchen, it’s without doubt the Ferrari of baking appliances.

Thank you Patchwork for making the impossible, possible, in such a creative way. I’ll be recommending you.

Thank you, Caro! We’re so happy we could help you get your KitchenAid.

Kathrin & Bernd’s Unique Wedding Gift

Kathrin and Bernd aren’t the biggest fans of weddings. So when it came to planning their own, all they really knew is that they wanted to have a relaxed, fun day with all of their family and friends. By the sounds of it, they really pulled it off.

Kathrin says ‘The day turned out to be the most special and amazing one. It was the hottest day of the year, and Clifton Nurseries, where we got married, felt like a secret escape, a wild oasis in the middle of London. After the wedding, we all went on to party at The Groucho until early morning – which says it all.’

While they were planning their perfect day, one issue arose – gifts. What should they do about the gift list? All the couple knew was that they definitely didn’t want a traditional gift registry, for all the usual reasons:

‘As we already had a household and our flat isn’t very big, we didn’t want people to spend money on things we didn’t need.’

So when a friend told them about our online gift list, they thought it was perfect. And Kathrin and Bernd knew exactly what they wanted to ask their guests to fund – a piece of art.

‘We thought a piece of art would be a unique reminder and memory of this occasion, and that it would always capture the mood of the moment no matter when and from where one looks back.’

We helped Kathrin and Bernd turn the artwork they wanted (‘I Have Chalks’ by Dran) into a patchwork, splitting it up so each guest could buy a different piece. From an hour of the artist’s time, to a pot of paint, everyone could chip in to give the couple their perfect wedding gift.

‘Everyone loved it. It was a very personal process and we received wonderful messages. And we love our new artwork, It simply makes us very happy that it is with us and visible every day.’

The couple are so happy they chose to fund a piece of art, as ‘it’s something we really love without exactly knowing why, and something that gives an endless amount of pleasure.’

What a special wedding gift. Thank you so much for sharing your story, Kathrin and Bernd, and congratulations from all at Patchwork!

An Extra Special Wedding Night: Funded by Friends

Elena and Alex have very busy lives, so when it came to getting married, they knew taking lots of time out to plan a big lavish affair wasn’t an option. Instead, they decided on an intimate ceremony at Islington Town Hall, with their Italian family, followed by a big lunch at Frederick’s with friends.

Elena says the day was a whirlwind, “Alex arrived in London on Thursday afternoon (and still had to buy his tie and a new white shirt), while I worked until lunch-time on Friday and just took a half day off from work, before our big day on Saturday! Our wedding day was exactly what we had hoped for. We were surrounded by those we love, and had a colourful, fun and exciting day. It all happened so fast!”

With so little spare time to plan their wedding, Alex and Elena wanted a simple, easy option for their gift list.

After living together for 3 years, and picking up souvenirs from all over the world, their little London flat was already filled with everything they needed. So with that in mind and no time for a honeymoon, they asked friends and family to contribute to the next best thing: their wedding night, in the lap of luxury, at The Savoy Hotel.

“It was a great choice, as the evening of our wedding day and the day after were so special and relaxing. We had time to spend together and to enjoy the start of our new life. It was a great opportunity to slow down, leave everything and everyone behind and just enjoy the two of us!”

The couple’s gifts included a night in a wonderful suite, with a view of the Thames, drinks at the Beaufort Bar, a seafood dinner at Kaspar’s, treatments in the spa, breakfast in the art deco Thames Foyer, and most importantly, indoor parking for their beloved ’72 FIAT 500.

“We couldn’t have done it without our friend’s contributions, so Patchwork was the perfect choice for us. It was flexible, no hassle, great fun to put together, and our friends could help make this dream of ours a reality”

According to Elena, their patchwork was a big hit. “Our friends really liked the idea and found it so fun and entertaining to do! A few of our friends have used Patchwork for their wedding gift lists and we’ve already used Patchwork a second time for a party we threw a few months after our wedding…but that’s another story!”

We look forward to hearing that story. Thanks so much for sharing your day with us, Elena & Alex, and a huge congratulations from all at Patchwork.

Chipping in for a Special Gift: Kittens!

Bea and her family only wanted one thing for Christmas. Well, two. Two little kittens! Bea knew they would need a few things to prepare for the arrival of the furry family members, so they decided to make a patchwork and send it out to friends and relatives. The kids were more than happy to forgo a few presents in order to get everything the kittens would need.

From the food bowls to the toys, their friends and family chipped in and everyone bought a piece.

So, having collected all the money, Bea went out and bought the supplies ready to bring home the new kittens. Then the family went and picked up their new feline friends – Irrawaddy and Inle.

“When we did our Patchwork for two kittens we didn’t know what to expect (perhaps just two legs and a tail!), but it worked fantastically – and allowed everyone to spend their budget and us to have two beautiful kittens (complete, in case you were wondering!). We’ve changed how we do birthdays and Christmas for the children (and us). Never again will the kids have ten unwanted presents (each played with for an hour), but instead, one thing that is really wanted and is kept for years.”

Thanks Bea and family for sharing the story of your gorgeous kittens with us. Can we come over for cuddles?
