Natasha of AllCall Travel, standing in Dolomites, Italy

Natasha, founder of AllCall Travel has written this guest post to share some hidden gems in Venice. Read on for an unbeatable mix of “off the beaten track” and classic Italian opulence, to help you plan your post-Covid honeymoon trip of a lifetime.

Honeymoon planning can be tough. You want to decompress from the day—too much family time, endless planning, and inevitable stress—but you also want a trip of the lifetime that fulfills every vacation hope and dream. Right? I get it.

A few years ago my husband and I road tripped through northern Italy. Milan to Lake Como to the Dolomites to Venice. It wasn’t our honeymoon, but it was beautifully planned if I do say so myself! I love planning great vacations and know how broken the whole process is. That’s why I started Allcall. It can be hard to plan a trip, to find the hidden gems that make it feel like you’re truly experiencing a destination. Especially in famously romantic places like Venice.

Typical view of canals in Venice, Italy

I’d love to share a few tips and finds from my trip. Hopefully, they will help with your own Venice planning.

First stop – the Dolomites

First suggestion, spend a few nights in the Dolomite mountain range before heading to Venice. Just a three hour drive from Venice, this region of Northern Italy left me totally awestruck. A mix of Italian, Austrian, and Swiss culture, it’s like no other area in Italy. Stay at Terra The Magic Place. A sister and brother duo run this Relais & Chateaux property with a 2-star Michelin restaurant in the lobby. Whether you go in the winter to ski or in the summer to hike, you’ll find yourself totally in love, with both your partner and the region.

If you are looking for a real adventure, hike to Lago di Sorapis. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s 7 miles I’ll never forget and the drive in is world class.

Next stop – Mini road trip to Venice

Then make your way to Venice. If you are driving, there is a rental car drop off right over the Ponte della Libertà bridge, connecting Venice to the mainland. It’s easy to miss so keep your eyes peeled! Drop your car; you’ll be on foot or boat for the remainder of your trip. (P.S. take the speed limit seriously on the bridge to avoid collecting tickets along the way, it’s all radar monitored. And trust, you’ll be getting Italian bills in the mail for years to come.)

Neighborhoods to live like a local in Venice

Let’s talk neighborhoods. My personal favorites are Cannaregio and Castello. Both feel like areas where people actually live. You’ll rub elbows with locals while enjoying a glass of vino at little cafes and wine bars or shopping at the butcher and market. Unlike San Marco, it is not tourist central. I do suggest an afternoon in San Marco to check out of the famed Piazza and Saint Mark’s Basilica. Grab a coffee at 300+ year old Caffè Florian, just don’t expect an off-the-beaten path feel in this area.

Eating and drinking in Venice

My favorite restaurant in Cannaregio is Il Paradiso Perduto, if you are looking for a genuinely good time, great cheap drinks, and excellent seafood, look no further. This spot is filled with loud, young, rowdy Italians and you’ll have a blast. There are only 2 time slots for dinner, make sure to call ahead to get reservations. You won’t be sat on time, so don’t come starving. Do come ready to drink.

Exterior exhibit at Peggy Guggenheim Collection

My favorite restaurant in Castello is Al Covo. This family-owned restaurant is perfect for a white tablecloth dinner, when you feel like getting all dressed up. The fresh pasta is what you dream about when you plan a vacation to Italy, and the seafood is what you expect when you plan a trip to Venice. There’s a reason it’s included in the Michelin Guide. The Castello neighborhood is also home to Giardini della Biennale, which hosts the Biennale Art Festival every year. But it’s worth checking out year round, even just for amazing views and peaceful surroundings.

Snacks and beers on table by window at Bar All Arco, Venice, Italy

One of the things I love about Venice is the mom-and-pop bars that offer 3€ beer, wine, and aperol spritz paired with cichettis. Cichettis are basically mini open faced sandwiches topped with all types of incredible local ingredients, like fresh mozzarella and tomatoes drenched in olive oil or fresh sliced white fish with green olives. You’ll find spots like this all over the island, but two worth checking out are Bar All’Arco (a must) and Osteria Al Squero. Osteria Al Squero is conveniently located next to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which is also a must.

I love these little bars, but sometimes you want to feel the full opulence of the city and for that I recommend grabbing a cocktail at the Aman Venice. It’s what you would expect, extremely over the top and high-end in all the right ways. Grab a drink by the water or at the bar, either way you’ll be pleased.

And lastly…

It can be tough to find those gems in Venice that aren’t pummelled with tourists and selfie sticks. But I promise, they exist. A few closing pieces of advice. Be sure to have a shortlist of places you know you want to go beforehand, otherwise it can be easy to fall into a tourist trap. Be prepared to walk, you’ll find spots you never could have had on a list and moments where the beauty of the city comes to life in unexpected ways.

We chatted to the gorgeous Kathryn and Jamie about their stunning Chateau wedding in France and their unforgettable honeymoon exploring Italy.

True childhood sweethearts, they’ve already been together for 16 years. The pair met at school when they were seven (sweet!) and got together when they were just twelve and thirteen. How’s that for a slow burn romance… They now live in Clapham Common, both work in marketing and share a love of travelling, as well as a healthy Netflix habit.

What a sweet story. So, how did you get engaged?

We got engaged on a trip to the West Coast over August and September 2016. Jamie proposed on a beach in Santa Barbara, California and we had the most amazing engagement tour up the coast from LA to San Fransisco.

Did you have an idea of the kind of wedding you wanted?

We wanted a really relaxed, inclusive and non-‘traditional’ day. Everyone there was there for us both, we had no sides for the ceremony and really tried to stay away from having ‘because you think you should’ attendees – everyone meant so much to the both of us and ensured it was an intimate occasion yet more than enough to have a big party! We always wanted it to be abroad, either France or Italy, to ensure we had a full weekend of celebrations, not just an afternoon – and that everyone could get to know each other and become friends, independent of us. We also had sharing food for all courses, and no ‘set’ three course meal to ensure that relaxed, sharing, friendly and actually quite informal, family vibe.

Sounds perfect. Did you have a first dance?

Our first dance was ‘You Are the Best Thing’ by Ray LaMontagne, under the lights in the courtyard of the Chateau.

If you had to pick one thing – what stands out for you?

Honestly, it’s so hard to pick! The whole weekend was amazing – we had an incredible Friday Night Dinner the evening before which helped everyone relax and get to know each other which really kicked off the whole weekend… On the day itself, we’d probably say either dinner, not just because we love food (hence the Italian honeymoon!) but because of being able to sit and watch all our favourite people together, there for us, which we’ll never get again. OR the dancing and party afterward, it was amazing to be literally dancing in the moonlight, to Dancing in the Moonlight!

We also had the most amazing suppliers. Our videographer (who also edited our honeymoon video below), and our incredible photographer really stand out. The whole team at Chateau de Lartigolle were amazing and also provided our brilliant wedding planner.

Why did you decide to set up a honeymoon fund with Patchwork?

We chose Patchwork as it was really important for us that people felt they’d bought us ‘something’ and not just given money for us to go away. The last thing we wanted was for people to feel they paid for the trip itself, but instead they bought us activities and things to do while we were there – which we physically did. We were able to take the live Patchwork link (and PDF) and make sure to send each person a photo each time we experienced their present while we were away. It made it a really personal thing for everyone that was kind enough to contribute, that they could see how special they’d made our honeymoon.

People commented how nice it was to be able to browse through the options (and different price points) we added, as well as leaving personalised messages for us alongside their present. It was so much fun experiencing everything and getting to send personal photos to people which showed their presents coming to life! Everyone said it was very user-friendly and super easy to use.

Would you recommend your trip to other honeymooners?

I could not recommend our honeymoon more highly (not just because I planned it) – but it was just perfect for what we wanted and what we love as a couple. We started in Venice, then to Lake Garda, onto Florence (and other Tuscan cities), down to Umbria (and staying near Orvieto), then to Rome, and finally Sorrento and Amalfi on the coast. It was all utterly amazing. Everyone will want different things so one bit of advice I’d give is don’t feel you have to do the stereotypical ‘honeymoon’ – do what works for you, and focus on what you enjoy doing when you’re away together, that way you’ll have the more perfect and unforgettable time wherever you end up. For us it was exploring beautiful cobbled streets and towns, whilst having a mix of coastal relaxing, eating amazing food and drinking insane wine – so Italy was a no brainer.

wedding guests throwing confetti on married couple

Tom and Anne-Marie met in 2013 while they were both working for the Arts Council. It took them a year to get together but they’ve been inseparable ever since. They married last year in a countryside ceremony in Cheshire – where they live with their little cat Marlowe. We asked Anne-Marie to tell us all about their wedding and their Patchworked honeymoon.

How did you get engaged?

We got engaged in Malta in September 2017. I’m half-Maltese and growing up would spend every summer in Malta staying with family. I still have a large family in Malta that I’m very close to and we go to visit a couple of times a year (unfortunately not for the whole summer any more!) We’d spent the day swimming and sunbathing and Tom had suggested we go for a walk before dinner. I threw on an old dress, didn’t bother to do my hair or make up and off we went. There’s a beautiful old sanctuary (a small church) in my family’s village where many members of my family have got married, including my parents and grandparents. It’s a place that means a lot to me and is one of my favourite places on the island.

We were standing in the courtyard outside the church when all of a sudden Tom got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so shocked I didn’t say anything for about 60 seconds (Tom claims it was much longer!) but when I finally recovered myself I said yes, of course. I couldn’t believe it. We went to a local café for a glass of champagne, then bought some celebratory cigars and went home to tell the family. It was wonderful being able to share such a special moment with them.

And when you started wedding planning, what kind of day did you want?

We wanted a wedding that reflected our personal style but was also laid-back and without some of the more traditional elements you might expect. We’re both very family-oriented people and knew that having a big family celebration, with all the people closest to us as part of our day would be really important to us. That meant our guest list quickly added up and we ended up with about 100 people attending! Our family is dispersed pretty far and wide – Tom is from Penzance which is where his parents and oldest friends still are, his brother lives in Sweden and my family is in Malta- so we spend a lot of time travelling back and forth.

We knew that for our wedding it would be really special to bring all of those people together to celebrate with us, so we quickly ruled out getting married in either Malta or Cornwall and decided to get married right on our doorstep in Cheshire (and let people come to us for a change!) I’m Catholic so having a church wedding was really important to me and for the reception venue we wanted somewhere relaxed and informal that really made the most of the beautiful Cheshire countryside. And of course, we wanted to have a great party too!

Is there a part of the day that stands out in your minds?

Anne-Marie: For me, walking down the aisle was definitely the most special part of the day. I felt like everything had been leading up to this moment and I was so happy it had finally arrived. I was given away by my Mum, who raised my sisters and me single-handedly, so that was a very special and proud moment for me, and I had my two sisters as bridesmaids which also meant a lot to me. Seeing all of our guests together in one place and then finally, at long last, seeing Tom standing at the altar and the look on his face when he turned around to look at me – that’s a moment I wish I could relive over and over again.

Tom: For me, the entire church ceremony and especially the vows was the most special part of the day. Although I enjoyed everything on that Saturday and it was all important, for me the act of getting married to the person I love the most in the world could not be topped. It was a very special moment – with everyone I cared about all under one roof witnessing the happiest moment of my life!

Did you have a first dance? What was it?

Like a lot of couples, we don’t really have a song that was specifically ‘ours’ but one song that’s always struck a chord with us from early on in our relationship is Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time, so we chose an acoustic version of this song, which was performed beautifully by our live band, Strings Attached.

Why did you decide to set up a honeymoon fund rather than a traditional gift list?

Like many couples who are already living together, we had most of the things we needed for our home, so we always knew we wanted to fund our honeymoon (something that became even more important when the wedding itself turned out to be so expensive!) We both love Italy and try and visit at least once a year if we can – in fact our first trip abroad together was to Venice. We’ve been to lots of different places in Italy but had been saving the Amalfi Coast for something really special – and it doesn’t get much more special than a honeymoon. It’s also really expensive so it’s not the kind of place we have been able to go to without the support of our friends and family!

So you made a patchwork!

Yes – a friend of mine who had got married a couple of years earlier had used Patchwork and I thought it was such a lovely idea and a really fun way to ask people to contribute to a really special experience for the bride and groom. It’s always a bit delicate asking guests for money (even if that’s the only thing you really want!) but with Patchwork it felt like people were giving us specific gifts relating to our honeymoon rather than just sinking money into an invisible pot. We chose a range of gift sizes so people could contribute whatever they felt comfortable with and it was really fun seeing what options our guests picked to fund. We even got a few scoops of gelato as gifts from some of the children which I thought was so sweet.

We were overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity – all of our honeymoon costs including spending money were paid for through our Patchwork which was more than we could have dreamed of. It felt really special to know that so many of our loved ones had contributed towards giving us the experience of a lifetime. We wouldn’t have been able to have our dream honeymoon without their help and the fact that our guests gave so generously meant the world to us.

What was the best bit about funding your honeymoon with Patchwork?

It was fun, it allowed us to be creative and most of all, it was convenient, particularly for our international guests who didn’t have to worry about bringing gifts with them or changing currencies in order to give us money. Everything could be done online, and we were able to keep track of how our fund was doing as we got closer and closer to the wedding.

It also helped us keep track of what items guests had chosen to fund so we could write personalised thank you cards after we returned.

Lots of our guests commented on how convenient Patchwork was for them and what a fun idea it was. It also gave them a bit more of an insight into us as a couple as they could see what sort of activities we were hoping to do on our honeymoon! We had miniature bottles of limoncello as our wedding favours and a few people commented on what a nice tie-in this was with our honeymoon, something they might not have known without our Patchwork.

And finally would your recommend Amalfi to other Patchwork couples?

The Amalfi Coast is a truly stunning part of an already above-averagely beautiful country! We stayed in Positano which is wonderful in its own right but also used this as a base to travel to other places along the coast including Sorrento, Naples, Amalfi and Capri. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to being surrounded by such breathtaking scenery – now when I look back at the photos it feels like a dream! The whole place has a very Old Hollywood glamour to it, around every corner you see something that is like a scene from La Dolce Vita. To be in the heart of such beauty and glamour, day after day, is truly a once in a lifetime experience and we would absolutely recommend this trip to other honeymooners looking to really push the boat out. Just a word of warning – getting back to reality can be a bit of an adjustment!
