“Capturing moments of time in inky lines of love” is the way Megan Metcalf describes what she does. Producing beautiful illustrations for couples who want to capture memories of their day; Megan creates unique, sustainable wedding gifts that bring people joy on the wedding day itself and for years to come. We chat to Megan to ask what it’s like to be part of this special moment in a couple’s history and find out more about her passion House of Love Illustration

How did House of Love come about? What had you done previously and what made you want to start your own business?

I put all the things I love together and created my dream job role. Drawing, dressing up and celebrations! It just came to me a few years back as I was finding my way as a professional illustrator. I don’t want to be stuck at a desk drawing – I’m too fidgety! So I decided to make parties my office, and The House of Love Illustration was born! In my previous London life I used to be a Trend and Colour Materials Designer for the likes of Nokia, Samsung and The Future Laboratory.

I was totally frazzled by London life and wanted to be more creative, but wasn’t sure exactly how. Four years ago I just went for it and (like many creatives) moved to Margate. I began to draw again and find my creative feet. It felt like I’d found home and what I was always meant to be doing. People liked what I did, so here I am! I now get all sorts of wonderful commissions, and creative opportunities continue to appear all the time. The House of Love Illustration is my love interest and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

And what are the best things about your job?

It is just such an honour to attend people’s big life events. I’m always exploding with joy to be there and to capture the characters and movements of the day as it unfolds. I always feel like the luckiest woman alive to be able to be surrounded by love and happiness and simply do my drawing thing. Plus I love an excuse to dress up too, so I’m in my element.

What have you learnt since starting your own wedding business?

Ah so frustrating sometimes but, patience, patience, patience!! It takes a lot of ground work before you see the fruits of your labour. But it’s well worth the wait. Honing the art of trusting in yourself and your work is essential. My three top tips would be: Be yourself and don’t get distracted by “nos” you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s cool. Say yes to scary things as they will take you to new places, different people, create opportunities and do your confidence the world of good. Ask others for advice. It’s ok to talk to others in your industry and beyond for advice. It was hard for me as what I do is so niche but I’ve had support from some great photographers. I’m very lucky as to some extent I can lead the way as, refreshingly, I have no one to emulate.

Tell us about what you do at a “typical” wedding

I draw approx 3-4 illustrations per hour and then add water colour to the originals in my studio. I also scan them in high resolution and create a digital portfolio for you. It’s totally up to you what you do with the artworks, you always get a framed picture, all the originals and images formatted in an album should you wish. One couple chose to exhibit the pictures the next day at a post wedding brunch. Others have created thank you cards or had large format originals created from their favourite, the options are endless!

What are some of your favourite commissions? Are there any particular pieces or weddings that have stood out?

I once drew at an incredible A-list musician’s wedding where I illustrated 30 ceramic cake stands, did the menus and also illustrated 30 tea pots too! I had to hold myself together not get too star struck and draw the epic wedding. I had to have the drawings finished and coloured in watercolour read to go on display the very next day for a post wedding brunch. I worked through the night and totally nailed them. Still super proud and some of my best ever illustrations.

What makes your work perfect as a group gift to include on Patchwork registry?

In a world of photo booths and filtering, having me illustrate the day is a lovely authentic way to capture the spirit and energy of a special occasion. I create beautiful and characterful live illustrations of your wedding or event. Just like a reportage photographer, I discreetly capture people, objects and moments that tell the story of the day. It’s captivating for guests and they love to have a peep over my shoulder and are always super intrigued about what I’m doing. You’ll have unique original works of art to treasure forever and know that your gift registry has a super low environmental impact so it’s a win-win!

Are you ever been asked to help with celebrating other occasions?

Paper anniversary gifts are super popular as I can easily work from photos and can create bespoke sizes to suit. I am also working with Festivals to create live art experiences and murals, workshops etc. I am always open to seemingly impossible ideas and love wild and wonderful briefs. People want to celebrate in different ways, make and hold on to memories in different ways. I am always learning and coming up with new ideas myself this is why I love what I do as it’s an adventure unfolding everyday.

What do you love doing when you are not working?

I live in Cliftonville in Margate, 2 minutes from the beach and I adore my seaside life. Early morning wild and windy walks on the beach with just me and the seagulls are the best. I love to drink coffee and write to do lists and daydream in cafes. Kent’s coast and vibrant art scene are fantastic for exploring but I also enjoy venturing back to London’s galleries when I can.

Because I’m so busy and my family are in Gloucestershire time with them is rare. So when I can find it, time with them (especially with my niece and nephew) is golden.

Thank you so much Megan for chatting to us and giving us a glimpse behind the scenes! If you’d like to set up an alternative wedding registry to ask friends and family to help fund wedding day illustrations or any other type of art you can customise one of our readymade templates to send out to guests.

If you’d like to get in touch with the lovely Megan to chat about your wedding day you can do so here.

Husband and wife team Kate and Abi run Nafisi Studios in West Sussex, where together they create beautiful, sustainable one-off commissions for the home, garden, or work place. Their mission is to combine their knowledge of heritage woodworking crafts to create something contemporary, sustainable, and of uncompromising quality. We chat to Kate to find out how they make it all work!

It’s a brave move to give up city life and start a new sustainable business with your husband, even if it is in beautiful West Sussex. What do you miss most about your old life Kate?

I liked the speed of information and conversation. It was very exciting working with lots of people from all over the world and who spoke many languages. It was a diverse bunch of people working at an insane pace of speed and this made me constantly stimulated by something – never a dull moment! Though highly addictive, and definitely unsustainable, it was quite the buzz.
Apart from that, I don’t miss much else really as all the parts I love such as the theatres, music gigs and art galleries are only 50 min away – which doesn’t feel far at all. I visit my parents and friends and they love to come here.

What have you gained from the change of lifestyle?

Now, I have a calm and slow wake up routine in the morning where I don’t have to travel anywhere, or see anyone. Instead I have created a morning ritual. I make matcha tea, I put a vinyl on the record player, I walk in the garden and listen to the birds in the trees. Since I am my own boss again, I can read more and I can be outdoors in nature more.
My friends come to stay more often, so I am experiencing more quality time with them, in a peaceful space instead of in a squashed bar over a rushed cocktail on a work night.

You and Abi now spend a lot of time together – how do you make that work?

I love working with Abi because he is a very playful and positive person. It took a good 4 months to adjust to each other’s differing work habits. It was mostly lots of listening and exchanging, as we are each good at different things. I had to learn to be patient with the slower pace of progress in woodworking now I didn’t have my laptop, shortcut keys and software. Abdollah had to learn to delegate tasks to me now he wasn’t working alone which involves a lot of communication and explanation where he used to be able to just get on with it.
We talk about what’s working and what we can do better quite a lot to keep the conversation open. We like to focus on each others’ strengths and then play to them, it’s more constructive.

What is your favourite part of the working day?

I love it when we can eat our lunch together outside in the garden, there is green everywhere we look. I enjoy listening to the same podcast or music track together over bluetooth headphones in the workshop – it’s like a silent disco for two, great fun!
We also do lots of tasks separately – Abi might be making a joint in the room next door, while I am finishing something – spray painting or sanding. I find this tactile work very meditative and soothing. And when I’m done I come into his workshop for a cup of tea and watch him work peacefully. I cherish these moments being next to him.

Tell us about your farm.

Our little cottage is a hop and a skip away from our workshop so no more long train commutes to work! We often have horses or sheep in the fields which are beautiful to look at and a little forest at the back of the workshop to go for a walk in. There are flowers, a greenhouse and chickens running around – it’s very idyllic. I am so grateful for the tranquil scenery around our farm. We have a garden at the back where we run our courses and it has been such fun to develop it together adding a pond, hammocks and this summer we’ll start to grow vegetables.

We’d love to hear about the sustainability of your business and how you make that work. How easy has it been?

We are proud to say that our workshop heating & lighting is run by 100% renewable energy because we use solar panels for the electricity and a biomass boiler to heat the whole farm.

All our wood is FSC approved (The Forest Stewardship Council) which means that it comes from sustainability managed forests. Instead of ordering new pieces of tree to be cut we mostly purchase and store offcuts from local suppliers that come in irregular shapes and sizes. It’s like a chef re-using the left overs in a kitchen to make a new meal. It takes more time to design and re-engineer a project when the wood is not cut to the correct sizes but totally worth it. We love reject wood!

Wow that’s fantastic. Are there any easy switches that have reduced your carbon footprint on a personal or business level?

We have started to compost our sawdust instead of burning it. Very small offcuts are collected in a more orderly fashion in order to reuse them for small art projects. Using Able & Cole has reduced the food packaging we use – they deliver almost all of our groceries without packaging or in recyclable containers. It also saves us driving to the shops every day, instead we get one delivery a week. We eat a lot less meat now, going from daily servings to eating it once every 2 weeks due to the disproportionate amount of water and land needed to feed animals. Our local Repair Cafe in the town centre is amazing. You can fill up on your Ecover products and you can drop items off that need fixing instead of throwing them away.

What would you suggest as a really beautiful and unique wedding gift?

I love our latest table commission The Sussex Table – it’s simple and elegant. The table uses a golden American oak wood locally bought as offcuts to be reused. The dark brown walnut is British grown from English Woodland Timbers. The contrast of the dark walnut centre and the warm oak is lovely.
The joint in the tables legs, is one Abdollah invented. Deriving from a traditional Japanese dovetail – he placed a dovetail inside a dovetail – very clever chap! It looks stunning.
We make anything one off from wardrobes, to garden sculpture to whole kitchens. But we love making tables the most becomes this is where people come together to commune, whether over a mini breakfast bar, an afternoon tea table or a large dining banquet. It’s a very social, interactive object and would make the ideal wedding gift to fund via Patchwork.

Thinking about other occasions – what else have people gifted?

We run a 1 Day Steam Bending Woodworking Course on our farm. Steam Bending is heating up strips of wood in a steam box and then bending them into fantastic shapes to make art works or objects of use. The technique was traditionally used to make curved wooden objects like barrels and boats.
These are fun days out in nature, for you to relax and make something with your hands from scratch. We take you into the woods to learn about types of wood suitable for bending and a bit about trees.
It’s an ideal present for a couple to learn something together and have a giggle as they go. You get to keep and take home whatever you make and lunch is included!

We have to ask you about your wedding. Where did you get married and what was the best bit?

We had a tiny family only registration day at our local town hall followed by champagne tea and baklava at home on cushions on the floor, telling shared stories and memories. Very romantic.
Then for our party, Abi and I wanted more of a festival celebration than a traditional wedding, so we set up tents, music, picnics and fairy lights in our garden and covered our 30 or so guests, with glitter and gold tattoos. I upcycled my birth-mother’s wedding dress (who passed away when I was 4 years old) paired with my martin boots and a leather jacket. I don’t think we spent over 2K on the whole thing, super simple and super fun ? My friend Aoife Baigent made us a mini video. Excellent.

Kate and Abi at Nafisi Studios wedding day

Did you ask for wedding gifts?

We didn’t want wedding gifts because our cottage is so small we can’t fit anything else inside it! We live a simple life. But we did accept contributions to our honeymoon. Hell yeah!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

We had an epic 2 week honeymoon in Nepal, which was the best holiday of my life! We stayed in the most beautiful farm called The Adam Tribe Organic Farm near Pokhara. The owners are two wonderful people with epic food and mountain views. Highly recommend this beautiful off-the-grid farm at the feet of the Himalayas, it feels more luxurious than our cottage in West Sussex! I was very impressed with what they have achieved at such altitudes. Heaven.

Thank you Kate for allowing us a glimpse in to your beautiful workshop and your West Sussex life! We’re so happy to hear about creative people working to inspire gift giving in ways that are thoughtful, sustainable yet still desirable and aspirational.

If you’d like to ask friends and family to help fund a beautiful and unique piece of furniture as an alternative wedding present simply customise this readymade template and send out to guests.

If you’d like to commission a piece from Nafisi get in touch with Kate and Abi here.

And if you’d like to read more about sustainability in business, check out this positive piece in It’s Nice That by our friend Naresh Ramchandani who sums it up perfectly: “Whether we’re improving our workplace culture or boycotting companies that put their profit before our planet, the plan is not neat or co-ordinated… But at its heart, it asks creative people to do what we do best: make problems vivid and make answers desirable. And it’s a reason not to despair, but to be hopeful.”

Patchwork recommends Soon the Sun

Soon the Sun is a stylish new label designed for women who like to travel far and pack light. Their essential holiday collection is made up of versatile pieces that can be pulled straight out of your hand-luggage, ready-to-wear on the beach during the day, or out for dinner at sunset. We interviewed STS Founder Pusia Chatfield to find out more.

First up, for all the super stylish women using Patchwork as a honeymoon fund, why is Soon the Sun the perfect honeymoon collection?

So much organisation and thought goes into the big day that by the time the honeymoon comes around there isn’t much space left to plan for that “What am I going to wear?!” moment. So I think “Soon the Sun” is the perfect match for the busy bride because she cares how she looks and feels but hasn’t got much time or headspace left to worry about what she’s going to take on her honeymoon, or even start to think about packing it. It’s a capsule collection made up of eight garments that answer all your holiday needs.

Ok let’s back up, why did you start Soon the Sun?

The idea came to me when I was away on holiday. I’d packed for twin boys, aged eight months, myself and half-packed for my husband too. I realised after the holiday how little I had worn, I literally had only worn a few things – my staple favourite pieces that I had always taken on holiday, that were now threadbare but still very much loved. The rest had stayed in the suitcase. This was the starting point for Soon the Sun.

What’s your design process – how do you decide what makes it in the collection?

I guess I just looked at the things in my wardrobe that I had worn over and over. They were the same pieces that came on holiday with me every year and I think this is probably what everybody else does. We tend to buy new things to take on holiday but we don’t really need or want them. These pieces that I love so much were my perfect garments, they answered all of my needs whilst on a sandy beach or in a busy market. They are lightweight, not precious fabrics, just cheesecloth – so no need to iron, easy to dry, timeless, throw on pieces, to wear from beach to bar.

What’s the difference between style and fashion?

Style stands the test of time, it’s fashion but timeless. It’s about knowing what suits you and what makes you feel comfortable – if you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, you’ll look stylish, confident and sexy. Stylish garments are usually a combination of the right fabric, shape, fit and colour. These elements can transcend fashion trends and decades.

Your garments are all organic, using 100% natural fabrics and dyes. Why is this important to you?

I just feel there is a small but growing amount of women who are starting to think about where the things they wear (like make-up and face creams) are being produced. We worry about what we eat – we are concerned about where it’s from and how it’s produced. There’s a growing conscience. I think every new business should be concerned with the environment and aim to reduce their impact in whichever way we can.
I thought it was time we started thinking about garments, the clothes we wear on our skin. If you’re in a beautiful place then you want to feel close to nature – you’ll feel good that your garments have done as little damage to the planet as possible. Our garments are made in India with a fantastic small factory, which is a start, but we still have to ship them back here – so I’m not totally there yet.

Why should we all consider buying less and buying better?

We are taught that fashion is fast moving, and that you need to keep up with the trends. When in fact a good garment can stand the test of time and transcend eras. My favourite era was the 70s and lots of my garments have been inspired by that time. You know when you own a good piece and it comes out every year and you still love it and wish you could buy it again, that’s what Soon the Sun is about – relaxing in the knowledge that you can come back time and time again and your favourite style will be there so once you’ve loved it ’til it’s threadbare, you can come back to buy the same piece again. Not much will change except maybe a new colour. Buy what suits you and buy what you love. We encourage women to #wearlessmore. It’s much cooler.

Along with the entire STS collection what are your holiday essentials?

+ A good skin cream with 50+ factor – LA ROCHE-POSAY is excellent!
+ Sunglasses – two pairs, big ones and less over the top ones
+ No underwear, waste of packing space. Always in my swimwear anyway
+ A good read or two. Anything set in a warm climate. I love ‘My Family and Other Animals’ by Gerald Durrell
+ Maybe a “sexy book” (as my nan would say)
+ Lots of Coco de Mer
+ Good shawl for cold nights.

What songs are on your holiday playlist?

Oh man this is hard… Any Prince obvs…
Relax Your Mind – New Look (whole album) – For dreaming in the car on the way to the airport or on the beach
Everywhere – Fleetwood Mac – Driving in the car with the roof open, sunnies on, morning sun on your face, first day on the beach
Pennies from Heaven – Inner City – For dancing on the beach, reminiscent of raving days, hands in the air moment
And any jazz for when you’re home cooling off and having a chill with a glass of wine in your hand and salty snacks, looking out at the view (if you have one) or just looking at next door’s towels.

Thanks, Pusia! Is anyone else now desperate for a holiday? Well if you’re lucky enough to be off on your travels soon, you’re going to want to enter our Soon the Sun giveaway. couple on bicycles holding hands

At Patchwork we love bicycles. They’re fun, they’re planet-friendly, and they make a brilliant group gift. Especially if you share the cost with friends. And we really like well made, reliable, beautifully designed bikes. That’s why we like Kennedy City Bicycles.

James builds each unisex bike in his Hackney studio, with a frame light enough to be carried up a few flights of stairs, in a small but perfectly chosen variety of colours and styles. You choose your frame colour, handlebar style, and leather, and then James will get to work – no fuss, just a simple, fantastic city bike.

If you think a Kennedy City Bicycle would make the perfect gift for a loved one, just customise this readymade bike patchwork, send it out to friends and family so that everyone can buy a piece – whether it’s a bell, a saddle, or a wheel, and once you’ve collected the funds you need, you can head to kennedycitybicycles.cc to place your order.
