Patchwork  LOVES The Fire Pit Camp set in seven acres of beautiful Norfolk! Rachel, along with her extended family, runs this little gem of a venue and here she tells us why it’s the perfect place for a gorgeous laid back festival wedding..

Tell us a little bit about The Fire Pit Camp… and the kind of couples it suits!

The Fire Pit Camp is a small, family run, eco glamping site. Our aim is to make sure every wedding and event is super personal, amazing and fun! We have a handmade hazel dome as the Bridal suite, bell tents, a decorated fire pit, outdoor licensed ceremony room, rustic benches and tables, a retro-double-decker bus and an incredible warehouse with 2 giant gnomes! We are perfect for a festival, boho and industrial chic wedding! If you want a wedding that is a little bit different – (and with awesome cocktails!) – we’re for you.

If you could choose just five words to describe your venue to couples what would you say?

Cool, funky, quirky, boho, eco.

What’s your favourite feature and why?

Can’t pick just one! The Retro Double-Decker Bus, The Fire Pit, 10ft Cocktail Bar and of course the hand made hazel dome The Wren’s Nest.

Which weddings stand out for you – any weird or wonderful ones?

Weddings that use all the elements! From the fields to the bus, outdoor bar, street food catering and the warehouse for a party. The best ones are the weddings that really harness all the magic that’s on offer, and use all the aspects of the site through the day and evening, finishing at the fire pit.

Have you ever had to save the day?

The warehouse and lean-too are always able to save the day if the weather was to turn! But we’ve been very lucky with rain here, maybe we have our own micro climate!

Do you have a favourite season or a particular theme or time of year that you think works best for your venue?

The summer seems to be perfect for the full monty festival outdoor festival wedding! Though we have had a wedding on Halloween which was epic too! It’s too cold to glamp in the winter so we are very seasonal.

How flexible is your service and what are you licensed for?

We are licensed for weddings, music and alcohol, we are super flexible and all we ask is that couples use our bar (they can bring in fizz and wine in for dinners and speeches with a service charge so we chill, store, serve, provide glasses, charge toasts and wash up). The couple get to choose any dream caterer, we have lots of contacts though and can even help them do it DIY!

Can you give us the heads up on some of your favourite suppliers?

We have loads of amazing contacts here in Norfolk. DJS @ourhouseisourhouse are amazing! Brilliant flowers by Niche Norwich/Niche Flowers and Swaffham Florist! Beth Moseley Photography, Honey and the Moon Photography, local Greenbanks Hotel and Strattons Hotel! Caterers, we love and know lots such as Woolf & Social, Squilla & Squidge, Churros & Chorizo, Moorish, Nomadi Pizza and gourmet doughnuts by Benedicts. And for an amazing alternative gift registry (especially if you want to do it a bit DIY and ask friends and family to give their time and skills to make your day extra special) of course it’s our friends at Patchwork!

And finally the Fire Pit lowdown – quick facts and stats:

What is your maximum guest capacity? 220

Is the venue licensed for civil ceremonies? Yes!

What time is lights-out? 12am

Do you have accommodation on site? Glamping, yes!

Do you have disabled access? Some, we are serving to make better access, we have one extra large w/c but it has a step up, and we have one changing-place, and can also assist to ground level area, however some outdoor grass/fields may prove tricky.

Thanks so much Rachel for showing us around the Fire Pit Camp! If you’d like to use Patchwork to ask your guests for their help to make your wedding day AMAZING you can customise this template – and you can find out more about our alternative gift registry here. Rachel and the team would love to hear from you about booking your wedding – you can get in touch here

Table set for wedding reception at Guardswell, Perthshire, Scotland

We’re a big fan of wedding venues that can feel like home for the weekend, and Guardswell Farm have that spirit in buckets. They’re also the complete full package. As well as being a gorgeous wedding venue, their stunning scenery and cosy hut accommodation is perfect for honeymoons, minimoons, occasions, and special weekends away. Plus, they’re all about the community spirit, something you know we love to champion here at Patchwork. But we’ll leave the lovely Anna to explain that below!

Tell us a bit about Guardswell Farm and what makes it so special.

Guardswell Farm is perched on a hillside, overlooking the beautiful Carse of Gowrie and River Tay…big panoramic views, a lovely and remote feeling, but really not too far from anywhere. We are a 150 acre grassland and mixed woodland farm. It’s home to happily grazing Hebridean sheep and two characterful donkeys – Hugo and Ollie. There’s also other wildlife that we hope to have enticed over the last decade of improving the ecosystems. It’s all of these surrounding elements that make Guardswell Farm “the venue” more than just a space to host a wedding.

Guardswell weddings give back a little…they mean that we can run workshops on the farm, as well as welcoming school children to ornithological mornings and apple pressing. They allow us to welcome guests into our little offgrid huts throughout the year. It’s a chance for a real digital switch off, and an opportunity to slow down and notice the wild flowers and bird song.

If you could choose just five words to describe the venue to couples, what would you say?

Relaxed, welcoming, natural, contemporary-agricultural (thats not really a word), fun

What’s your favourite feature and why?

I adore the Bull Pen, a little space tucked away in the Steading with a corner glass window. When we first bought the farm, The Bull Pen was full to above the knees with ancient hay and deep “farm litter” but it was so charming!

The old door, that would now lead to our covered “Lean To” at the front, had a chalk note scrawled into it describing the farrowing of a pig overnight.

Now the walls are clad using the old timber that used to hold the Cattle Court roof up. A tiny safe hides in the corner for my grandfather’s whisky. There are massive squidgy sofas covered in waxed cotton and draped with wild sheepskins. And a couple of chairs face south and there’s an old milk churn as a rest for your tea. I could spend hours in there reading, or looking at the view.

Which weddings stand out for you – any weird or wonderful ones?

To be quite honest (and without sounding too twee), we only host a handful a year all of our weddings stand out! We really do get the opportunity to get to know the couple – even become friends in some cases. We adore the really hands-on, everyone involved, DIY floristry weddings – the ones where every member of the family is there the day before and every task is covered by them – be it making the buttonholes, or even just keeping the tea topped up and tummies full. In terms of memorable… we’ve definitely been given a lot of animal related responsibility – that doesn’t always go well, or to plan, but we love having dogs involved in weddings – so totally worth the drama!

Have you ever had to be a hero and save the day?

Wow this is a hard one. There is always a bit of an emergency “kit” in the office, including nail varnish, safety pins, batteries, needle and thread… I guess there are lots of tiny things that we help with but nothing major – touch wood! – has happened, and certainly not something that we haven’t been able to deal with yet. We are a hardy bunch from farming families, so I think we’re pretty resourceful – and we also have the magical Jade, who has come from working in zoos for 10 years, so we like to think that if she can deal with rhinos and elephants, she can deal with anything at a wedding.

By Claire Fleck Photography

Do you have a favourite season or a particular theme or time of year that you think works best at Guardswell Farm?

As much as I adore the bright greens of spring…I think Autumn is just the best. The cosy evenings that are starting to draw in, dark wild foliage and roaring fires (but not too cold outside). Pretty dreamy!

And finally, give us the lowdown – quick facts and stats

  • Family business, with some new adopted family now with us
  • 3 Huts and 3 Houses, sleeping 30 in total on the farm
  • 27 weddings of beautiful souls every year
  • Opened in June 2017
  • 150 acres of rolling grass fields and beautiful woodlands
  • At least 2 courses or our own events a month- including our new Evening Markets
  • Guardswell Grows – our sister company, run by my sister, growing gorgeous ecologically minded vegetables
  • The best collection of farm/work dogs you’ll ever meet: 2 chocolate labradors Raisin and Porridge, 1 chocolate Cocker Mole, 2 black labradors Gillie and Ramsay (Porridge’s babies).

See! Didn’t we tell you that Guardswell Farm is just the dream location for everything?! If you’re looking to create a Patchwork for your DIY wedding, head to our wedding gift list templates – or why not try our Highland Fling honeymoon template?

When a venue describe themselves as a ‘heptagonal palace of joy, confetti and dancing’, what’s the point in us even trying to write an introduction? The Giraffe Shed are a badass new Welsh wedding venue that are totally redefining what barn wedding venues have to offer, and we chatted to Hannah and Neilo, the duo behind the renovation, to chat all things giraffes, sheds, and barns.

Tell us a bit about The Giraffe Shed and what makes it special.

We are a family run wedding venue in the rural hills of Wales. We’re a non traditional, no rules, alternative pad and nothing is too out there. Basically anything goes!

If you could choose just five words to describe the venue to couples what would you say?

Badass, alternative, pink, light, industrial.

What’s your favourite feature and why?

I would say our candy striped wall & mural. Neilo would say our charred black wood frontage.

Which weddings stand out for you at The Giraffe Shed – any weird or wonderful ones?

All of our weddings have been out of this world – we can’t choose any favourite bits – they’ve all been completely individual to our awesomely insane amazing couples.

Have you ever had to be a hero and save the day?

Cake arrived smooshed at the first wedding and my awesome cake maker friend Sam’s Sweet Treats saved the day! She was the real hero!

Do you have a favourite season or a particular theme or time of year that you think works best at The Giraffe Shed?

I love late May / early June – everything is fresh and beautiful and the early evening light is so amazing; shining through our floor to ceiling glass wall is to die for!

And finally, give us the lowdown – quick facts and stats:

If you don’t like sheep – don’t bother. Weekend hire is £3000 for 2020 – we only do 10 weddings a year so you kinda need to get in touch! We are a working farm – our wedding season is from May to September.

If you’re hosting your wedding day in the incredible The Giraffe Shed and are going for a DIY vibe, why not get your pals to help out with our DIY Wedding patchwork?

old cinema wedding venue in Sheffield

We’re taking our favourite wedding venue series outside of London, turning our heads from smoke to steel with one of our favourite Sheffield wedding venues, Abbeydale Picture House. We chatted to Elinor, one of the event co-ordinators, about what exactly makes this converted cinema the perfect place to have your wedding celebration…

Tell us a bit about Abbeydale Picture House and what makes it special.

APH is a Grade 2 listed building in South Yorkshire. Opened in 1920 by the Lord Mayor, it was one of the largest and most luxurious cinemas in Sheffield. It boasted intricate decor and a mosaic floor and soon became known as the ‘picture palace’ owing to it’s decadent interior and architecture. Now, it’s half turquoise and boasts some pretty awesome 70s cog flower wallpaper, and is the centrepoint of a huge restoration project, seeing it be reclaimed and reused by the people of Sheffield and beyond as an incredible community space and venue.

Taken on by CADS in 2017, (a charity focused on supporting the creative arts in Sheffield) the fly tower (the area behind the screen) has been cleared, which has opened up an amazing space for dining, meaning day-long celebrations can be held there. The legal marriage license was granted in the same year, meaning folk may be legally wed in the auditorium, in front of a projection of their choosing. Inner City partnered with CADS from day one and continues to invest in the space, and deliver unique weddings and events there as it’s a venue full of soul and character and we bloody love it.

If you could choose just five words to describe the venue to couples what would you say?

Characterful, historic, ambient, unique, cool (AF!)

What’s your favourite feature and why?

When it’s lit beautifully the feeling in the place is very ambient and humbling. It’s a great space for live music and the huge screen means couples can project art on there, stills from movies, movie clips and videos they’ve made. You can feel the history of the building around you and it looks incredible. Wedding ceremonies here can be very moving!

Which weddings stand out for you – any weird or wonderful ones?

It’s still very much a newbie to the ‘wedding market’ but we’ve had some lovely ones so far. We’re not allowed favourites- they’re all our favourites! I particularly love it when people make the most of the huge screen.

Everyone who chooses to celebrate with us is contributing toward the restoration and upkeep of the space so we are always honoured to host one of the most special event in people’s lives.

Have you ever had to be a hero and save the day?

We have a fantastic team of events ninjas and technical staff from CADS who work so, so, hard to make this a viable and attainable venue for people. They’re all heroes. We host the weddings in a relaxed DIY style and always help and advise where we can but give couples the freedom to make their celebration their own.

Do you have a favourite season or a particular theme or time of year that you think works best at Abbeydale Picture House?

Summer for sure – we generally take bookings here from April to October as there is no central heating. We have had weddings outside of this timeframe but they’ve hired in specialist heating which can crank up the costs a bit.

And finally, give us the lowdown – quick facts and stats

  • You can do the legal deed here
  • It’s in the heart of Sheffield’s Antique’s Quarter
  • You can bring in your own caterer
  • You can BYO table wine and reception drinks for a teeny corkage fee
  • Auditorium capacity is 300, flytower is 120
  • There is a bar area, auditorium, flytower and a car park
  • Our instagram is @picturehouseweddings

We’re getting up close and personal with our pick of the most gorgeous wedding venues to hear what makes them stand out from the crowd. We chatted to Tia from the Town Hall Hotel in London’s vibrant East End to share some insider secrets. Here she tells us about her favourite weddings and what made them unique…

Tell us a bit about Town Hall Hotel and what makes it special.

Town Hall is a really fun and unique venue. On wedding days, guests are treated to a day of visiting all the quirky spaces and take in all the wonderful architecture and art so they never feel like they are stuck indoors, thanks in no small part to the fabulous glass domes and huge windows. I like to call our hotel a ‘walk in’ wedding venue in that if you didn’t add any extra decor, it would still be a stunning wedding given all our unique art work and features.

Our couples and their guests start off in the historic Council Chamber for the ceremony, then on to the high ceilinged De Montfort Suite for some bubbles and canapés and maybe a tune or two on our grand piano. Then it’s time to visit the oak panelled, art deco Bethnal Hall for dinner and dancing, passing through Lovers Lane, a wonderful and slightly naughty wooden mural!

If you could choose just five words to describe the venue to couples what would you say?

Quirky, art-deco, authentic, cool, friendly

What’s your favourite feature and why?

Definitely the art-deco/Mad Men styling of the building. Everything is just so damn cool!

Which weddings stand out for you – any weird or wonderful ones?

We had a wedding recently where the couple transformed the party area into an enchanted forest! It was absolutely amazing. They used a company called The Plant People and hired about 20 massive shrubs and trees of varying sizes and shapes. They also hired lots of uplighters and hanging lights which gave an enchanted feel. There is a picture on our wedding instagram – @townhallhotel_weddings

Have you ever had to be a hero and save the day?

A florist got her days mixed up once and I literally had to go to the florist up the road and make some DIY bouquets! It was more of a garden centre really so I had to be a bit… creative! Let’s just say this was before greenery and ferns were En Vogue but they actually looked really cool and the Bride and bridesmaids were thrilled and it made for a great story during speeches!

Do you have a favourite season or a particular theme or time of year that you think works best at Town Hall Hotel?

I love Town Hall Hotel in the winter months as the oak panelling and candlelight make it a little bit extra magical…

And finally, give us the lowdown – quick facts and stats:

Maximum guest capacity? 120

Is the venue licensed for civil ceremonies? Yes

What time is lights-out? Midnight

Do you have accommodation on site? Yes, we have 98 bedrooms

Do you have disabled access? Yes

Patchwork wedding planning - favourite venues - The Ace Shoreditch

In the first in our new favourite venue series, we’re chatting to Kristie, Social Event Manager from The Ace Hotel in London’s Shoreditch to hear what she loves most about this incredible venue with its amazing panoramic views. Here she shares some venue secrets and tells us about her wedding “best bits”…

So, please introduce us to The Ace!

Ace Hotel London Shoreditch hangs its hat in the heart of East London. Our spaces are airy, flexible and filled with flora, with wide views of the city from our rooftop. Every wedding we host is wholly different, and we’re here to make each one special.

If you could choose just five words to describe the venue, what would you say?

Dreamy rooftop views of Shoreditch.

What’s your favourite feature and why?

Our rooftop is incredibly special and I love all the greenery — there’s basically a small jungle in the bar which brings the space to life and adds a lush visual layer. The Conservatory Archives curated the plants, and they regularly tend to them. The plants get a lot of love and, in return, they animate the space beautifully.

Which weddings stand out for you – any weird or wonderful ones?

Every wedding is unique and special — every couple is different, singular in their vision and, without fail, there is always an element of surprise at each ceremony. One of my favorites, though, was the first wedding I organized. It was one of the hottest days of the year and everyone sipped on the couple’s bespoke bourbon cocktail, named after their adorable son. It was a love-filled affair and cemented my dedication to making each wedding as special as possible.

We throw beautiful weddings all year around — Ace Hotel London is a graceful host through all seasons, with flexible spaces that creatively and comfortably accommodate guests no matter the weather. Rain or shine, we find that guests always love the view of the city from our rooftop. And we’re actually finding that winter weddings are becoming more and more popular; we’ve hosted spectacular weddings with candle-lit ceremonies and hot mulled wine on the terrace.

What does The Ace offer in terms of your space, catering options and other services?

The hotel is rich in communal spaces that can host a variety of wedding styles, and we have incredible in-house vendors who know our spaces intimately and are the best at what they do. Along with our rooftop kitchen and bar teams, we offer bespoke menus that can cater to specialty diets and fully vegan food and drink options. Our dedicated pastry team can provide beautiful wedding cakes and other sweet and savoury options like chocolate and cheese boards. We have state-of-the-art technology, including sound systems, DJ booth and projectors for screenings.

Are you licensed for weddings or are you solely a reception venue?

We offer both legal weddings and receptions.

What unique features does The Ace offer couples?

Our flexible spaces can host lavish, intimate affairs or raucous soirees with everyone you know — plus, we have room for the whole party to stay together. From panoramic rooftop views of East London to full service catering from our Rooftop kitchen, Ace Hotel London is equipped with super-functional and stunning rooms (great for pre-wedding photography), professional, seasoned staff and the convivial spirit of collaboration, community and celebration. Can you recommend some local suppliers?

We love our local suppliers and are happy to recommend vendors for all services — they all know the space and can help create personal and unique elements for every occasion.
