Snow capped mountains with text overlay which reads 'patchwork x ClientEarth'

Today on the blog, we’re super excited to be chatting to Grace Archibald, Philanthropy Manager at ClientEarth, one of three extraordinary environmental charities that Patchwork are supporting with our new 50/50 for the planet business model. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Grace holds a Bachelor Degree in Art Education from the University of New South Wales. Prior to moving to London, Grace worked on the establishment of a national foundation to record Aboriginal languages. From a young age, Grace has been a keen environmentalist and says: ‘I am honoured to pursue this passion and work for ClientEarth. It is inspiring to work for such a vital organisation, which together with a group of dedicated supporters is making a positive impact to ensure our planet will be habitable for all beings in years to come.’ Not heard of ClientEarth? Read on to hear about their inspiring work and unique approach to fighting climate catastrophe.

What’s unique and different about ClientEarth compared to other environmental charities?

ClientEarth has a unique approach – harnessing the power of the law to protect life on Earth. Our team of legal experts have demonstrated that the law is a powerful tool for creating systemic change – quickly and without a huge level of investment. We have a distinct set of expertise, ranging from corporate and financial law to human rights, campaigning and advocacy specialists. This range of knowledge and experience enables us not only to enforce existing laws, but also to inform and implement new, stronger protections for people and planet. All of our work is led by science, and we focus our attention on high-leverage opportunities to achieve impact in four key areas – climate, nature, health and justice.

Can you tell us a little bit about what a typical day looks like for one of your lawyers?

For one of our lawyers a day at ClientEarth is typically varied. It could include meeting with partners and barristers to discuss case actions, scoping work for upcoming actions as well as speaking with funders about our work.

What projects are you working on right now that Patchwork users are helping to support?

We have over 160 cases currently pending across the world, but one of our most significant legal challenges is close to home – we are suing the UK Government over its inadequate net zero strategy. Our case argues that the Government has failed to set out sufficient policies to reduce emissions enough to meet its legally binding carbon budgets.

We often choose cases in which climate and wildlife laws intersect, working towards dual wins. For example, we are working to protect important populations of marine mammals in the Gulf of Venice, whilst challenging key aspects of the Italian government’s policy on oil and gas exploration. Our case opposing the proposed Teodorico Project gas plant was recently boosted by the local regional authority, who have intervened to back all of our arguments.

What do you think makes the Patchwork and ClientEarth partnership such a good fit?

We need a multi-pronged solution to the vast environmental challenges that we face. Patchwork is a creative solution for combatting waste and is influencing how and what people buy. Reflecting on one aspect of our work – which is to stop plastic pollution – our strategies are driving companies to bear the real cost of throwaway plastic and stopping plastic at its source. Our team is dedicated to using the power of the law to push for long term solutions that will end plastic pollution. So Patchwork and ClientEarth are changing mind-sets and systems so that the planet – which also means all that inhabit it – is at the centre of all we do and that’s why our partnership is such a good fit.

Aside from supporting ClientEarth through Patchwork, what are some other ways people can show support for the fight against climate catastrophe and help to ensure our planet thrives in the future?

There are so many exciting things going on at ClientEarth, I’d recommend subscribing to our newsletter to hear regular updates. These often contain more specific actions that people can take to help fight against climate and ecological breakdown, such as joining campaign actions. If you’re inspired by our work, you can also support ClientEarth directly. More generally, it’s also great to find out what environmental projects are going on around you, that you can get involved in. Creating sustainable communities at the local level is very rewarding and can inspire others to do the same.

Finally, do you have any celebrations, community projects or personal milestones coming up this year? If so, how would you use Patchwork to help plan a party, project or present?

We’ve got a big anniversary coming up this year – ClientEarth is turning 15 years old. In that time, we’ve grown from a small charity focused on the EU, to an international organisation with a global presence and over 250 members of staff.

Thank you so much Grace, and congratulations to all of you at ClientEarth on your upcoming 15th anniversary! We’re here when you’re ready to start planning that party.

Once again, we’re honoured to be supporting you with the help of our brilliant Patchwork creators and their friends and families. True people power in action!

If you’ve got a present, party, or project to plan, you can use Patchwork to invite guests to give cash, time and skills to make it happen. When you sign up to our one-off payment or our monthly subscription, and choose ClientEarth as your charity we’ll donate 50% of our own fee directly to them. All money collected through your Patchwork is yours; to spend how, where and when you like.

family visiting grandparents on doorstep during coronavirus

And so here we are in Autumn, and things feel as uncertain as ever. But, there’s one thing we’re all certain we still can and want to do, and that is let our friends and family know we are thinking of them. Whether it’s a birthday, Christmas, a new baby or any other life event, Patchwork can help to connect people, with thoughtful isolation gifts that are really wanted, appreciated, and easy to organise digitally and from afar.

Gifts that say we’re thinking of you

Many of our elderly or vulnerable relatives are now spending a lot more time at home, alone. Including – sadly – those special occasions like birthdays, and now possibly Christmas too. It’s heartbreaking that we can’t be there in person with the ones we love to give them a proper hug or sit inside with them and have a cup of tea! Doorstep calls and sitting in the garden are lovely in the summer but as winter approaches, won’t be as easy to do.

Patchwork founder Liv’s Nan – Vera – turned an incredible 93 this month, and for the first time, she wasn’t able to visit one of her many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for tea, cake and flowers. So to let her know they were thinking of her, the family clubbed together, and used Patchwork to organise and fund a beautiful and thoughtful group gift. A birthday garden patchwork allowed everyone to chip in towards some flowers for her back and front garden, some compost and manure (and the gardener to do the planning and planting!) So that although she might not be able to get outside at all right now, she can still have beautiful, colourful views from her windows.

A beautiful garden, piece by piece

Liv’s sister Rosie set up the page and shared it with the family near and far so that everyone could contribute to Vera’s “Room with a view”. One of the best things about a Patchwork group gift page (other than it being gorgeous to look at and a breeze to use) is that you can set your own prices so that everyone can chip in what they can afford. Whether it’s £5 towards some geraniums, £15 for an hours gardening time or £70 for two climbing roses. You can even set patches without a monetary contribution, so people can gift their time and skill instead. In this case, Rosie asked if anyone in the family could help out by being the gardener’s assistant (socially distanced and with their own tools of course!)

A gift that everyone can (eventually!) enjoy

So in the months to come, Vera will be looking out at newly planted roses, clematis, geraniums, wallflowers and know that it all happened because her family are thinking of her and miss her and want to show her how much they love her! And hopefully by Springtime the daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be back in the flower-filled garden for tea and biscuits and a chat with Vera.

Plants and flowers make us happier

Even if they don’t have a garden, everyone has a window to look out of, so this group gift idea can easily be adapted to include hanging baskets, window boxes, small potted trees, a bird feeder to hang up and maybe a small watering can to keep them healthy and green! It makes sense as we are all spending more time at home, to make our surroundings as nice to look at as possible. Adding colour and life to our outside space with flowers and plants is also scientifically proven to make us feel happy. And so for people living alone, this is an isolation gift that really can make a difference to their mental wellbeing at this stressful and often confusing time.

Big Nanny of Catford

The perfect group gift for someone in isolation

We can’t think of a more perfect gift for an elderly or isolated person at this time, than something beautiful to look out at from their window. Whether they live in a small flat, or have a big garden, there’s always a window to sit by, and so this gift can always make the view better. If you’ve been inspired to set up a “Room with a View” patchwork or garden patchwork see our readymades and have a play. It’s so easy to set up a page, make it personal and then share with family and friends. Any questions? We’d love to help on LiveChat, via [email protected] or over the phone on 07547 439 805.

As a company who believe in minimal waste and maximum fun, it may seem like wedding favours are way down our list of priorities. However, we’re also a company founded on the unbridled joy of giving, so we love wedding favours – when they’re genius items that people actually want to receive, rather than just leave on the table! We thought we’d round up our favourite wedding favour ideas that your guests are either bound to love and treasure forever, or totally relish and finish in the moment. Either way, it’s a double feelgood factor of giving your guests something they’ll 100% love, and not wasting anything. Winner winner!

Personalised letterpress goodies

Luxury letterpress goods tick all the boxes: super design-led, super personal, and super sustainable as they’re reusable/recyclable! One of our favourites is Lucky Ink Press – we love this How We met card above which could double as a coaster, and her For Richer, For Poorer scratch cards with attached coins. If you’ve got a lot of guests who don’t know many people, you could also include some icebreakers or dares on there; and if your Nana’s made you her world famous lemon drizzle for your cake table, you could give everyone a copy of the recipe as their favour.

Coffee pouches

You wouldn’t settle for subpar coffee on a normal Saturday, so why do it for your wedding day? Ruttle & Rowe – who you may recognise from their coffee cart at Lea Bridge Station – also bag their incredible coffee as wedding favours, which can double as place settings. Your guests will thank you the morning after!

Lottery tickets or scratchcards

Lottery tickets can be an excellent no-waste favour that guests will LOVE – just ask Claire Fleck, who photographed this amazing wedding earlier this year during the Six Nations. Hector and Yvonne bought all of their guests lottery tickets betting on the match outcome – a third betting on a win, a third betting on a loss, and a third betting on a draw – and handed them out at random. The guests with the winning tickets (betting on the now infamous 38-38 draw!) won nearly £5k between them! Now tell us your guests wouldn’t want that?!

Handpainted Keyrings

Bee Davies Illustration is the queen of hand-painted leather. The OG babe of hand-painted wedding jackets, she also does super cute keyrings. Double them up as place settings with your guests’ names on them, or just have a gorgeous design to match your theme on the day. Double points for them being environmentally friendly as they use offcuts that would otherwise be discarded. Winner!

Wildflower seeds

We’re all about a greener earth for the future here at Patchwork, so we absolutely adore these seedboms from Kabloom. They’re friendly flower bombs with ‘wildflower power potential’ – basically, you can lob it at an unloved space, and it will be transformed over time into a beautiful floral wonderland! It’s guerrilla gardening at it’s fine, but the cute grenade packaging (a sentence we never thought we’d say) makes them supremely giftable.

Vicky’s Donuts

If you’re not planning to serve your guests food immediately at the reception, a great way to keep those hunger pangs at pay is to serve edible favours. And what better to serve than delicious Vicky’s Donuts?! All handmade in London with the freshest ingredients, they’re the nicest donuts we’ve ever tasted – and, what’s more, they look SO CUTE. They’re customisable by flavour, colour, theme, shape – you could even have mini pizza slices if you wish.

Personalised mugs from Third Eye Signs

These mugs are the real deal. Third Eye Signs is a signpainter in Leeds, who mixes traditional handlettering methods with excellent slogans, modern styles and killer colour combos. We love these mugs as favours, because aesthetically they’re fancy as without feeling stuffy, but also because they’re SO practical. They mean your glass hire costs are slashed, you minimise the non-recyclable cups you’d otherwise be using, and they’re a great conversation piece for people – PLUS, no more awkward “What’s your name?” chats. Love love LOVE.

Wedding favours are a lovely way for you to give back to your guests, but they probably want to give something to you too! If you’re looking for other bits for your wedding, take a look at our DIY wedding template for some inspiration…

The end of November signals the coming of Black Friday; a day of massive discounts and absolute mania. Instead of getting swept up in over-consumption, mass production and unbelievable amounts of waste, we’re encouraging you to get involved with some anti-Black Friday activity instead. We’ve rounded up some of our faves to help you take a stand for the planet and for the people:

Eco-Age and Global Fashion Exchange’s #TAKEBACKBLACKFRIDAY

This year, Eco-Age have partnered with the Global Fashion Exchange to Take Back Black Friday. Take Back Black Friday is a digital protest, encouraging consumers to raise awareness and create positive impact on the day by highlighting individual acts of circularity and fashion sustainability. For example, you could attend a clothes swap and post about it on your socials, showcase items you’re repairing or upcycling before the festive season, or simply show up and stand up for the environment.

Stories Behind Things – The Big Clothes Switch (& Natalie Glaze’s Book Swap Club) and The Christmas Collective

Stories Behind Things founders Jemma and Ella have two events going on over the Black Friday weekend to help you make better, more conscious choices; on Thursday 28th November they’ve partnered with Who What Wear UK and WeWork to host The Big Clothes Switch. Take clothes you no longer wear or love and switch them for clothes you’ll never want to take off your back again. Then, from Friday 29th to Sunday 1st December, they’re hosting The Christmas Collective, a curated market full of sustainable, ethical brands to help you shop with a clear conscience.

And So To Shop’s Colourful Friday

As And So To Shop are an independent marketplace, they use Black Friday to rally against unsustainable discounts and demeaned value. Instead of offering discounts, they encourage their sellers to add something extra and meaningful into each order. This way, consumers still feel like they’re getting a great deal, but ASTS are still showing that what small businesses do is worth paying for.

Buy Me Once’s #GreenFridayFriends

Buy Me Once will be spending their Black Friday spreading a message of calm, conscious consumerism, and are encouraging people to do the same to become their Green Friday Friends.

At Patchwork our aim is to help you reject unnecessary consumerism and waste all year round; our gifting patchworks allow you to get one big thing that you really really want, rather than lots of little bits that will go to waste. You can check out our alternative gift patchworks here. Alternatively, we’ve noticed a trend this year that we absolutely love, where people are using their patchworks to spread joy and kindness in lieu of presents – we’re calling this the Give List, and you can make your own here.
