Snow capped mountains with text overlay which reads 'patchwork x ClientEarth'

Today on the blog, we’re super excited to be chatting to Grace Archibald, Philanthropy Manager at ClientEarth, one of three extraordinary environmental charities that Patchwork are supporting with our new 50/50 for the planet business model. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Grace holds a Bachelor Degree in Art Education from the University of New South Wales. Prior to moving to London, Grace worked on the establishment of a national foundation to record Aboriginal languages. From a young age, Grace has been a keen environmentalist and says: ‘I am honoured to pursue this passion and work for ClientEarth. It is inspiring to work for such a vital organisation, which together with a group of dedicated supporters is making a positive impact to ensure our planet will be habitable for all beings in years to come.’ Not heard of ClientEarth? Read on to hear about their inspiring work and unique approach to fighting climate catastrophe.

What’s unique and different about ClientEarth compared to other environmental charities?

ClientEarth has a unique approach – harnessing the power of the law to protect life on Earth. Our team of legal experts have demonstrated that the law is a powerful tool for creating systemic change – quickly and without a huge level of investment. We have a distinct set of expertise, ranging from corporate and financial law to human rights, campaigning and advocacy specialists. This range of knowledge and experience enables us not only to enforce existing laws, but also to inform and implement new, stronger protections for people and planet. All of our work is led by science, and we focus our attention on high-leverage opportunities to achieve impact in four key areas – climate, nature, health and justice.

Can you tell us a little bit about what a typical day looks like for one of your lawyers?

For one of our lawyers a day at ClientEarth is typically varied. It could include meeting with partners and barristers to discuss case actions, scoping work for upcoming actions as well as speaking with funders about our work.

What projects are you working on right now that Patchwork users are helping to support?

We have over 160 cases currently pending across the world, but one of our most significant legal challenges is close to home – we are suing the UK Government over its inadequate net zero strategy. Our case argues that the Government has failed to set out sufficient policies to reduce emissions enough to meet its legally binding carbon budgets.

We often choose cases in which climate and wildlife laws intersect, working towards dual wins. For example, we are working to protect important populations of marine mammals in the Gulf of Venice, whilst challenging key aspects of the Italian government’s policy on oil and gas exploration. Our case opposing the proposed Teodorico Project gas plant was recently boosted by the local regional authority, who have intervened to back all of our arguments.

What do you think makes the Patchwork and ClientEarth partnership such a good fit?

We need a multi-pronged solution to the vast environmental challenges that we face. Patchwork is a creative solution for combatting waste and is influencing how and what people buy. Reflecting on one aspect of our work – which is to stop plastic pollution – our strategies are driving companies to bear the real cost of throwaway plastic and stopping plastic at its source. Our team is dedicated to using the power of the law to push for long term solutions that will end plastic pollution. So Patchwork and ClientEarth are changing mind-sets and systems so that the planet – which also means all that inhabit it – is at the centre of all we do and that’s why our partnership is such a good fit.

Aside from supporting ClientEarth through Patchwork, what are some other ways people can show support for the fight against climate catastrophe and help to ensure our planet thrives in the future?

There are so many exciting things going on at ClientEarth, I’d recommend subscribing to our newsletter to hear regular updates. These often contain more specific actions that people can take to help fight against climate and ecological breakdown, such as joining campaign actions. If you’re inspired by our work, you can also support ClientEarth directly. More generally, it’s also great to find out what environmental projects are going on around you, that you can get involved in. Creating sustainable communities at the local level is very rewarding and can inspire others to do the same.

Finally, do you have any celebrations, community projects or personal milestones coming up this year? If so, how would you use Patchwork to help plan a party, project or present?

We’ve got a big anniversary coming up this year – ClientEarth is turning 15 years old. In that time, we’ve grown from a small charity focused on the EU, to an international organisation with a global presence and over 250 members of staff.

Thank you so much Grace, and congratulations to all of you at ClientEarth on your upcoming 15th anniversary! We’re here when you’re ready to start planning that party.

Once again, we’re honoured to be supporting you with the help of our brilliant Patchwork creators and their friends and families. True people power in action!

If you’ve got a present, party, or project to plan, you can use Patchwork to invite guests to give cash, time and skills to make it happen. When you sign up to our one-off payment or our monthly subscription, and choose ClientEarth as your charity we’ll donate 50% of our own fee directly to them. All money collected through your Patchwork is yours; to spend how, where and when you like.

You’ve probably seen the viral tweets and subsequent memes that do the rounds every so often, asking why don’t we throw a new business shower for people setting up on their own (“Instead of Baby Showers, let’s host Business Showers. When a friend starts a business, we all come together, congratulate them and bring resources for their business” suggested Ke Sharp. And the internet duly went WILD.)

Well, the reason that new business showers resonated is because it really is a bloomin’ brilliant idea. And rather than consign them to the graveyard of Internet Ideas That Could Have Been, Patchwork have come up with a brilliant way to actually make them happen – so here’s 5 reasons you should have a new business shower:

Frankly, you deserve a new business shower

It’s easy to downplay it when you start a new business, and we don’t want to freak you out, but: going it alone is a big deal. It’s scary and exciting and nerve-wracking and incredible (and totally worth it!), and it’s a decision that justifies definite celebration. Add some ceremony to the occasion by throwing a new business shower, and giving it and you the moment you so richly deserve.

It’s a great way to tell people about your idea

We’re not saying use your business shower as a marketing campaign, but we are saying a new business shower is a great way to publicly let people know you’re actually doing this thing! It’s a big ol’ vibrant flare signalling to people that it’s happening: you’re going into business with your brilliant idea that you’ve kept to yourself for so long.

Because it’s a bit like having a baby

I’m going to caveat this by saying that obviously having a business is not the same as having a baby – I’ve had a few sleepless nights as a business owner, but as a child who didn’t sleep a full night til I was eight and a half years old (sorry Mum!), I know they’re not exactly comparable. But they are a bit comparable – both things you’ve created, that you feel incredibly proud of, that you’ve never done before, that you can read all the books in the world to prepare yourself for but ultimately still have to learn as you go. To really stretch this metaphor to its limit, a baby shower is a brilliant way to mark a momentous milestone and to welcome in a new chapter, and so a new business shower can too.

Your loved ones will be itching for ways to support you

A new business shower is a brilliant vehicle for your family and friends to support you and your new venture, in a way that isn’t by becoming your customers or clients. I mean, if they want to buy from you, who are we to stop them – but a lot of the time they won’t be a fit for your ideal customer base. And that’s ok! What they will be, though, is desperate to show their enthusiasm, and throw themselves behind you in a demonstrable way. A new business shower is a great way to get them involved, and to give them ways of being able to show their love and support for you that don’t see them buying stuff they don’t need.

Community is really important, even as a business of one

We’re pretty sure the Beatles were specifically singing about a New Business Shower when they penned (I Get By) With A Little Help From My Friends. Having a strong support network, be it 2 people or 20, is crucial – people you can lean on, rant to, and share your wins with, and who can do the same for you. Setting off on your business adventure knowing that you carry a bit of each of these important people with you in everything you do can be really encouraging.

And, because I love you and want you to succeed: here’s an extra reason why you should throw a new business shower with Patchwork:

It’s environmentally friendly

You may not have a fully formed idea of all of your business values yet, and that’s ok, but I think we can all agree that having a business that does good and minimises harm is something we should all be striving for. With Patchwork, your friends and family have the option to ‘do’ and ‘make’ some of the patches you provide as well as ‘fund’. This means that rather than buying you well-intentioned but ultimately useless stuff, they can make, find, and rehome items that deserve a second life, as well as contributing time or expertise that leaves its mark in your heart, but not on the earth. Clever, huh?

Are you thinking of hosting a new business shower? GOOD FOR YOU! You can look at some premade templates here, or read more about how to create them here. You can also read the story of the original New Business Shower, (yes the one that launched actual Patchwork itself!)

Best of luck with your new venture – you’re going to smash it!

Planning your perfect adventure and choosing that dream honeymoon destination in which to kick off married life can be a tough decision at the best of times, but add in a global pandemic and things get a little more complicated. So Original Travel have come up with a few of their top picks for off-the-beaten-path honeymoon destinations, where you can escape the crowds and even – in some cases – avoid getting on a plane at all.

Ancient site of Nemrut Dagi, Turkey honeymoon destination
Stone faces at the ancient site of Nemrut Dagi, Turkey

Explore Eastern Turkey

If the idea of spending your honeymoon lying on a beach and never leaving the hotel is entirely unappealing, then Eastern Turkey is probably the polar opposite, and so might be just for you. This is a honeymoon destination for culture vultures and history buffs, those who love sinking their teeth into a destination and really discovering all it has to offer. Turkey’s lesser-explored eastern region is filled with fascinating Christian history, including the final resting place of Noah’s Ark, Mount Ararat. Another highlight is visiting the earliest religious structure ever discovered – Gobekli Tepe, which is an archaeological site thought to date back to around 10,000 BC. You could also add on some time in Cappadocia, a region known for its iconic ‘fairy chimneys’ and other unusual rock formations – a sunset over this spectacular landscape is a sure-fire way to inject some extra romance into your honeymoon.

Zambezi river from the air

A Secluded Safari in Zambia and Zimbabwe

Have you always dreamed of spending your honeymoon on safari, but would rather go somewhere a little more off-the-beaten-path than the classics such as Kenya or South Africa? Then may we present Zimbabwe and Zambia. Think small luxury camps, secluded game drives (without the hoards of 4x4s you might find in some other top safari spots), the best guides in the business and romantic dinners under the stars in the middle of the bush. This honeymoon destination will serve you sunsets right on the Zambezi river – keep an eye out for hippos and other wildlife! Then top the honeymoon off with an unforgettable visit to Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World for a very good reason.

Trulli houses in Alberobello, Italy

Slow travel Italian style

Italy may not exactly fit the ‘off-the-beaten-path’ honeymoon criteria, but if you’re looking for a flight-free, slow travel honeymoon destination then heading to Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, by train might be the perfect option. At Original Travel, we are big fans of taking the slower route, and really enjoying the scenery along the way, and travelling by train allows just that, as well as being a much more eco-friendly alternative to flying.

Puglia is one of our all-time favourite spots in Italy, and one that hasn’t yet been totally overrun by tourists. Expect countryside dotted with ancient olive trees, beautiful baroque architecture in every town and village throughout the region, wonderful unspoilt stretches of coastline, and fantastic food that even other Italians acknowledge is the best in the country (praise indeed). In short, all of Italy’s best bits, but without the crowds – to us that sounds like the perfect honeymoon option in this strange corona-era (or any era for that matter).

Romance in Romania

Romania couldn’t be much further from the classic beach honeymoon destination if it tried, but if it’s authentic, memorable experiences in a beautiful setting that is virtually untouched by tourists, this could be just the answer. A trip to Transylvania is almost like travelling back in time, offering the chance to reconnect with nature and everything around you, which sounds like a very appropriate way to spend your honeymoon in our opinion. Spend your days getting to know local families, visiting craftsmen and artisans to learn about their trades and hiking through the stunning Piatra Craiului National Park (part of the Carpathian mountain range), all while staying in charming guesthouses and taking the time to truly slow down and live in the moment. This is also another destination that can be reached from the UK entirely by train, so fits the bill if you are looking to travel flight-free.

Taktshang Goemba, Tiger nest monastery, Bhutan
Tiger nest monastery, Bhutan

A Himalayan Honeymoon in Bhutan

If it’s eco-friendly travel you’re after, Bhutan ticks the box brilliantly. 70% of the country is covered by forest, which means that it soaks up more carbon than it emits, in turn making Bhutan the world’s only carbon negative country. Spend your honeymoon here visiting Bhutan’s ancient monasteries, soaking up the traditional Buddhism steeped culture and trekking through this pristine Himalayan environment.

While the country may have so far escaped the twin forces of globalisation and overtourism, there is luckily no shortage of luxury hotels dotted throughout the mountain valleys of Bhutan, so you will have a suitably luxurious place to rest your heads. The only downside on the eco-front is that unless you’ve got a very generous annual leave allowance, reaching Bhutan by train might be a stretch too far, so flying is really the only option (but luckily for you, Original Travel offsets all the carbon from our clients’ flights, so you can do this guilt-free).

Patchwork Honeymoon Fund honeymoon destination

If that’s inspired you to start planning your honeymoon, use Patchwork to ask guests to help treat you to experiences that will make it extra special. Whether it’s £10 for a bowl of orecchiette in Puglia, £50 towards a day’s hiking in Romania, or £150 towards a private game drive in Zambia, your guests will love to contribute to the activities that mean the most to you. Customise one of our templates (we have over 100 different honeymoon destinations) or start your own bespoke page from scratch.

Original Travel are working to instil confidence in people booking any sort of holidays at the moment, by ensuring flexibility in booking dates and destinations (in case travel advice changes) and offering travel insurance that covers coronavirus curtailment.

And of course if you use Patchwork honeymoon fund to collect gift money from friends and family, you have complete control of your money and total flexibility on where, when and how you spend it.

Natasha of AllCall Travel, standing in Dolomites, Italy

Natasha, founder of AllCall Travel has written this guest post to share some hidden gems in Venice. Read on for an unbeatable mix of “off the beaten track” and classic Italian opulence, to help you plan your post-Covid honeymoon trip of a lifetime.

Honeymoon planning can be tough. You want to decompress from the day—too much family time, endless planning, and inevitable stress—but you also want a trip of the lifetime that fulfills every vacation hope and dream. Right? I get it.

A few years ago my husband and I road tripped through northern Italy. Milan to Lake Como to the Dolomites to Venice. It wasn’t our honeymoon, but it was beautifully planned if I do say so myself! I love planning great vacations and know how broken the whole process is. That’s why I started Allcall. It can be hard to plan a trip, to find the hidden gems that make it feel like you’re truly experiencing a destination. Especially in famously romantic places like Venice.

Typical view of canals in Venice, Italy

I’d love to share a few tips and finds from my trip. Hopefully, they will help with your own Venice planning.

First stop – the Dolomites

First suggestion, spend a few nights in the Dolomite mountain range before heading to Venice. Just a three hour drive from Venice, this region of Northern Italy left me totally awestruck. A mix of Italian, Austrian, and Swiss culture, it’s like no other area in Italy. Stay at Terra The Magic Place. A sister and brother duo run this Relais & Chateaux property with a 2-star Michelin restaurant in the lobby. Whether you go in the winter to ski or in the summer to hike, you’ll find yourself totally in love, with both your partner and the region.

Woman walking away from camera with view of the Dolomites, Italy ahead go her

If you are looking for a real adventure, hike to Lago di Sorapis. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s 7 miles I’ll never forget and the drive in is world class.

Next stop – Mini road trip to Venice

Then make your way to Venice. If you are driving, there is a rental car drop off right over the Ponte della Libertà bridge, connecting Venice to the mainland. It’s easy to miss so keep your eyes peeled! Drop your car; you’ll be on foot or boat for the remainder of your trip. (P.S. take the speed limit seriously on the bridge to avoid collecting tickets along the way, it’s all radar monitored. And trust, you’ll be getting Italian bills in the mail for years to come.)

Neighborhoods to live like a local in Venice

Let’s talk neighborhoods. My personal favorites are Cannaregio and Castello. Both feel like areas where people actually live. You’ll rub elbows with locals while enjoying a glass of vino at little cafes and wine bars or shopping at the butcher and market. Unlike San Marco, it is not tourist central. I do suggest an afternoon in San Marco to check out of the famed Piazza and Saint Mark’s Basilica. Grab a coffee at 300+ year old Caffè Florian, just don’t expect an off-the-beaten path feel in this area.

Buildings and architecture in Castello, Venice, Italy

Eating and drinking in Venice

My favorite restaurant in Cannaregio is Il Paradiso Perduto, if you are looking for a genuinely good time, great cheap drinks, and excellent seafood, look no further. This spot is filled with loud, young, rowdy Italians and you’ll have a blast. There are only 2 time slots for dinner, make sure to call ahead to get reservations. You won’t be sat on time, so don’t come starving. Do come ready to drink.

Exterior exhibit at Peggy Guggenheim Collection

My favorite restaurant in Castello is Al Covo. This family-owned restaurant is perfect for a white tablecloth dinner, when you feel like getting all dressed up. The fresh pasta is what you dream about when you plan a vacation to Italy, and the seafood is what you expect when you plan a trip to Venice. There’s a reason it’s included in the Michelin Guide. The Castello neighborhood is also home to Giardini della Biennale, which hosts the Biennale Art Festival every year. But it’s worth checking out year round, even just for amazing views and peaceful surroundings.

Snacks and beers on table by window at Bar All Arco, Venice, Italy

One of the things I love about Venice is the mom-and-pop bars that offer 3€ beer, wine, and aperol spritz paired with cichettis. Cichettis are basically mini open faced sandwiches topped with all types of incredible local ingredients, like fresh mozzarella and tomatoes drenched in olive oil or fresh sliced white fish with green olives. You’ll find spots like this all over the island, but two worth checking out are Bar All’Arco (a must) and Osteria Al Squero. Osteria Al Squero is conveniently located next to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which is also a must.

I love these little bars, but sometimes you want to feel the full opulence of the city and for that I recommend grabbing a cocktail at the Aman Venice. It’s what you would expect, extremely over the top and high-end in all the right ways. Grab a drink by the water or at the bar, either way you’ll be pleased.

Aman, Venice, interior of building with stained glass windows and grand staircase

And lastly…

It can be tough to find those gems in Venice that aren’t pummelled with tourists and selfie sticks. But I promise, they exist. A few closing pieces of advice. Be sure to have a shortlist of places you know you want to go beforehand, otherwise it can be easy to fall into a tourist trap. Be prepared to walk, you’ll find spots you never could have had on a list and moments where the beauty of the city comes to life in unexpected ways.

Hammock over water with over water villas in background, The Maldives

Grace from Turquoise Holidays has written this guest post to share her reasons why you just can’t beat the Maldives as a honeymoon destination. For complete relaxation, indulgence and getting-away-from-it-all, it can’t be topped. If you’re setting up a Patchwork honeymoon fund and asking guests to treat you to some once in a lifetime honeymoon experiences, read on for some inspiration to really bring your Maldives honeymoon patchwork to life…

Gin-clear waters. Cashmere-soft beaches. Rustic-chic overwater bungalows. Tropical island seclusion. The Maldives boasts all of the dreamy ingredients that feature in a honeymooner’s fantasy honeymoon and at Turquoise Holidays, we believe you can’t beat it as the ideal relaxing escape for newly weds to enjoy after a hectic few days getting married.

The perfect post-wedding recharge.

A honeymoon is a holiday you’ve probably been thinking about before you even got engaged. Of course, your wedding is one of the biggest single days of your life you’ll ever have to plan for and a Maldives honeymoon is the perfect opportunity to recharge and begin your married life with some romance in paradise. All of the wedding planning, menu tastings, music selections and endless ‘wedmin’ can seem stressful, but we’re sure your minds are also dreaming of white sands, turquoise waters and cocktails at the same time!

Privacy, pampering and escape.

Who can blame you? Those tiny Maldivian islands are akin to gorgeous green droplets in an ocean of blue, places where you can lie in huge, luxurious beds draped in white linens listening to the sound of crystal-clear wavelets lapping the pristine beach. They’re accessible only by speedboats and tiny seaplanes so privacy is guaranteed – an essential part of any honeymoon. When you’re there, you can expect fabulous dining, dreamy overwater infinity pools and out-of-this-world bathrooms, some with glass-bottomed bathtubs for you to peer into the ocean below. Endless pampering by each resort’s attentive staff will make you feel like a celebrity, too.

Overwater villa or beach villa? Decisions, decisions…

There are two ways to honeymoon in the Maldives – beach villas and overwater villas. Each type can come with our without private pools and both have gorgeous bathrooms. Overwater villas, of course, have direct access to the lagoon and you can sit on your outside decking watching rays and sharks glide by quietly. It’s truly captivating! It goes without saying that the overwater bungalows are iconic but beach villas offer the edge when it comes to space and privacy. If you’re staying for a week or more, we’d recommend splitting your time across both room types, so you can get the best of both worlds. It also helps to not blow the budget out the water!

A feast for the senses.

Every day in the Maldives is like a feast for the senses and while you can easily just relax on its postcard-perfect beaches, the Maldives is also somewhere you can indulge in a variety of activities. There’s plenty of incredible snorkelling and diving, where you can swim alongside reef sharks, tropical fish and turtles, while cocktail classes, romantic sunset cruises, cookery lessons, yoga and beach picnics will all ensure boredom is never close to setting in. For the foodies who are needing to treat themselves after the pre-wedding diet, each hotel has an array of restaurants serving a multitude of cuisines – some even have underwater restaurants for the added ‘wow’ factor!

Where to stop off enroute to paradise.

The Maldives is also a great destination for twinning with other places, should you want to add another dimension to your honeymoon. Destinations in the Middle East like Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Oman, as well as Sri Lanka, Thailand and Singapore, all add colour and an exciting contrast, as well as being simple connections to the Maldives.
The Maldives is a truly beautiful collection of islands, which live up to the hype and what you see in the glossy brochures and on Instagram. It’s the perfect backdrop to any honeymoon and one which is no less than you deserve after a hectic wedding. It’s time to put your feet up in paradise!

We’ve been thinking about how you can make a real impression on your big day with little details. And we thought who better to ask for some tips on the subject than our friend Ellie. You may know of Ellie as the Wedding Enthusiast, where she adds a little creativity to the wedding world, or simply the Enthusiast, where she makes those brilliant Caring is Cool t-shirts. Or for being a master baker (she made us Patchwork cookies!). However you know her, you’ll know that she LOVES weddings, and she’s got a great eye for detail. So here are Ellie’s top five small wedding details that have a big impact:

Decorate your chair-backs

foundrentals

One thing that often gets overlooked in ceremony styling which can otherwise have a major styling effect is jazzing up your chair-backs. There’s a giant wave of couples moving away from chair covers and sashes. Instead, it’s been on trend to have pared back chairs that do the talking all by themselves. However, I think having foliage, fronds or tassels, for example, hanging off randomly interspersed chairs can really elevate the moment. It brings the chairs in as a part of the ceremony, rather than a place for onlookers to observe.

Lay tables with varying heights

bestdayeverfloraldesign

Lean closer, pals, as I’m about to let you in on the Wedding Stylist’s 101! Varying heights are the key to impactful table layouts. You want elements that bring both height – like taper candles, tall flower arrangements, ceramic ornaments or thin-necked bottles – as well as depth – like tealights or stout candles, gathered fruits and trinkets.* It’s the undulating comparison that has the major styling effect.

*If everything is too tall, it looks cluttered and frenetic (plus, it’s totally impractical to chat across the table). And on the other end, if it’s all too low, it gets all too easily lost.

Concentrate on backdrops and ceiling installations

With such a focus on personal details – and rightly so, your wedding is nothing if not a celebration of your personalities – the bigger picture can sometimes be lost. Instead of getting bogged down by minutiae and having 7000 different elements for the day, consider a bold and eye-catching backdrop or a hanging installation. They draw the eye as soon as you enter the room, can convey whatever style and vibe you’re going for not long after, and they bring the room together, acting as the main feature. They can dress up a bare room, add serious colour to a plain one, and get the party started in a more-traditional-than-you’d-have-liked one. And when used with not much else, their impact is often magnified – winner winner budget-conscious but still delicious chicken dinner.

Don’t underestimate the power of signs!

www.thiswillbeforever.com

Signs have been seriously sexed up recently, to become the ultimate in wedding décor desires. Whether it’s a big neon one from Vowed & Amazed or This Will Be Forever, or a hand-painted one by Third Eye Design, Sylvie Signs or All Frills Studio, having a punchy message on display brings an air of contemporary cool to your day. Maximise this aching cool by keeping it as home décor for your living room or above your bed afterwards!

Wedding favours – just think about it

If you’re of the opinion that wedding favours are totally unnecessary and you have 100% vetoed them for your day, I totally get it – they are, at the heart of it, not a necessity. In their defence, however, if I may m’lord; when they’re well thought-out, they’re absolutely genius.

I am in favour of wedding favours for many reasons. First of all, gift-giving is my number one joy in life (which is why I love Patchwork so much, because it’s gift-giving without restraints) and to be able to give gifts to all my gathered nearest and dearest would give me SUCH A FULL HEART I don’t even think I’d be able to walk through the door. Secondly, they’re often a great way of communicating with your guests when you may not have had a chance to yet – remember, the chances are they’ll have gone into the reception room before you have, in order to welcome you in. But they do have to be well-thought out and personally resonate with each guest – and not wasteful, either! Think of what David Attenborough would have to say, hey?

couple on a honeymoon road trip

Road trip honeymoons are all the rage. So we thought we’d get blogger and roadtrip expert Hannah Sierp of Fifty States One Day to tell us all about why she chose a roadtrip honeymoon, and why she’s been roadtripping ever since.

When it came to planning our honeymoon there was only ever one option for my husband Josh and I – a USA roadtrip. After driving around New England leaf-peeping and chowing down on fresh and tasty lobster the year we got engaged, then listening to the best blues, jazz and country music in the Deep South the following year we knew we wanted to hit the open road and explore another corner of America.

Because the USA is vast – in the fifty states there are nearly 4 million miles of road, 316 million people, at least 17,500 museums, 58 national parks and countless restaurants and diners – we weren’t ever going to be short of a thing or two to do!

After much debate we decided to go West. We flew into Las Vegas for a couple of nights of debauchery, took in some incredible natural wonders including the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Yellowstone and Yosemite, and some really fun cities like Seattle, Salt Lake City and Portland before flying home from  San Francisco. In this three week trip we travelled 5,000 miles – equivalent to driving all the way to India from London – and visited 9 diverse and beautiful states. We spent 80 hours in the car together…it’s lucky we get on.

Our honeymoon was absolutely incredible. It included firing guns and necking jello shots in Las Vegas, the gobsmacking beauty of the Grand Canyon especially at sunrise and sunset and spotting burping geysers and bumbling bison in Yellowstone National Park. We felt like cowboys as we gazed across Monument Valley. In Seattle we went to our first-ever ball-game and up the Space Needle for cracking views of the city. We went to the restaurant where Bella from Twilight went on her first-date with Edward in Forks – I even ordered the same meal as Bella, dorky I know! Josh ate a maple-and-bacon donut for breakfast at Voodoo donuts in Portland where we also slept in a former high-school.

We drove through a tree. Yes, an actual tree in Northern California – even though we were in a GIANT American 4×4 – and somehow we didn’t get stuck.  We cycled across the Golden Gate Bridge and saw seals frolicking in the water below. We got drunk at a tiki-bar and went to a dimly-lit prohibition bar in San Francisco where you needed a secret password to get in. We saw Willie Nelson play live and hoped we’d be as flipping cool as he is when we’re in our eighties; actually we’d like to be that cool now. We visited a ghost-town in the California desert where the inhabitants just left in the early nineteenth century after the gold rush. It was deserted with spooky dilapidated churches and we tried (and failed) not to be too scared. Oh and we slept in a giant beagle.

That’s right. We spent a night sleeping in a wonderful, absurd giant wooden beagle located in Cottonwood, Idaho. American roadtrips are wonderful for those who love the quirky and offbeat. During our travels we’ve spotted a giant blue whale off Route 66, the world’s largest basket, a “troll” living under a bridge in Seattle and across the states there are statues of a massive lumberjack called Paul Bunyan who is often portrayed hanging out with a blue ox called Babe. On the USA roadtrip we have planned for this year we’ll see the incredible presidential carvings on Mount Rushmore, the world’s largest six-pack of beer and South Dakota’s a-maize-ing Corn Palace.

If you’re thinking of a USA roadtrip for your honeymoon we would heartily say “Yeehaw!” Think about how long you’ve got for your trip, how much you can budget, and the kinds of activities you really love.  Be realistic about the kind of traveller you are – do you like to get up every day at the crack of dawn (that’d be us) or have a leisurely brunch? Do you like to spend a while in one place or change your base often? How long could you spend travelling every day or week without getting tired or bored? Do you like late nights and dive bars (that would be us again – burning the candles at both ends!) or relaxing suppers and the theatre? Do you prefer cities or small towns, forests, plains or beaches? There can be roadtrips where you can sample all of this very easily! And don’t forget the time zones – especially if you’re travelling back to catch a flight.

Josh and I are now crazy about USA-roadtrips. We have an ambition to visit each and every state, and chronicle our adventures on our blog. This post about how to plan a USA roadtrip might be helpful and you’re always welcome to tweet us at @50States1Day if you have any logistical questions or want any tips. Our best advice would be to download a good podcast, make a brilliant roadtrip playlist or two, buy some snacks for the car and hit the open road… amazing times await you!

Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Hannah.
